Winter 2017

The winter season is giving us a preview this coming weekend December 9/10 with snow predicted. Our Tail of the Dragon Store is closed for the winter months and will reopen in March. The area highways remain open for the entire winter, but conditions can be difficult at times, especially on the Cherohala Skyway with elevations above 5000 feet.

The Tail of the Dragon Online Store remains open year round. Easy shopping for the holidays.

Enjoy some of Killboy’s best shots from 2017 at the bottom of the page. Remember, your photos from years past are still online for you to purchase. Just search by date at Killboy.com.

A big thank you to all of the veterans who have served the United States.

October 30, 2017

October 30, 2017 Snow showers all day Sunday with high temps in the 30s. The snow didn’t stick in most places and our store was quite busy with cages all afternoon. The girls have been having some end of season fun dressing-up in various costumes. Weather looks okay for the coming week with no snow expected. Get that last run of the season in before the weather turns. SEE PHOTOS BELOW FOR COSTUMES

September 2, 2017

Saturday September 2, 2017 – Misty rain didn’t keep riders from the Tail today. Good crowd enjoying 200 free hot dogs served by Leighann next to the Big Metal Dragon. Big Labor Day events planned and the weather looks much better on Sunday and Monday.

August 21, 2017

August 21, 2017 Total Solar Eclipse (Syzygy) at the Tail of the Dragon and Cherohala brought in larger crowds than we expected. Tents were set-up in any wide space on the back roads. The weather was near perfection with a few scattered clouds that parted nicely for the 2 minutes and 30 seconds of totality. The show was even more spectacular than we thought it would be. During totality it was dark as night with an eerie calm. We’ll be posting various photos of the event in the next few days.

The crowd at Santeetlah, the highest point on the Cherohala Skyway. All of the higher elevations were just as packed.

Total Eclipse

Total Eclipse 2017.  On Monday, August 21, our region will witness the most accessible total eclipse in decades. The best place to see it is in the Path of Totality shown as the dark area in the regional map. We are lucky to have the Path of Totality pass over our region, including the Tail of the Dragon and the Cherohala Skyway. The width of totality is 71.5 miles across North Carolina and the speed of totality is 1452 mph.

What to expect:
Totality is at approximately 2:35pm for our region (depending on your exact location). The total eclipse will last 2 minutes 30 seconds, plus or minus depending on your location under the path. The only safe way to look directly at the uneclipsed or partially eclipsed sun is through special-purpose “eclipse glasses”.

Weather:
It is mid-afternoon when the shadow passes though our region. This time of year, we generally have afternoon clouds. But there are many afternoons with clear skies. Even with afternoon clouds, the eclipse shadow brings a cooling that should have a dramatic effect in dissipating the cloudiness, provided the clouds are not producing rain. Even on a cloudy day, you will witness the darkness of the full eclipse.

Plan a trip:
If you haven’t already made accommodation reservations, you will not find availability in the region. Plan on a day trip, allowing extra time for traffic delays. See list below for regional activities.

August 11, 2017

August 11, 2017 – Great weekend with the Miatas and a surprise visit by 140+ sand rail buggies. Also met a group from Barcelona whooping it up. Once again we get calls every day asking about the supposed rain-out that the weather pages keep posting. ONE MORE TIME …. when you see a 60 or 70% chance of rain it does not mean it will rain all day. Summer brings afternoon showers that are short lived and widely scattered. Today the Accuweather called for rain all morning, at 10 am it is full sun with radar showing clear skies for hundreds of miles.

August 1, 2017

August 1, 2017: This week is Miatas at the Gap version XXI. Should be a busy time on all of the area roads. Please drive carefully.

The next big event will be OutSmarting the Dragon August 17.

We will have our Tail of the Dragon/Cherohala Eclipse T-shirts by Friday August 4.

July 8, 2017

July 8, 2017 – a busy 4th with the usual afternoon showers. For all those inquiring about the weather be advised that 90% rain forecasts simply means it will likely rain at some time during the day. This usually means in the heat of the afternoon. Rain is normally short lived and spotty. Take shelter for an hour or so and it will likely clear.

A reminder that helmets are required for Polaris Slingshots.
